I didn’t know the man, but I noticed his expression immediately before he even walked past Jake’s truck, to take a better look at me sitting in the passenger seat, making it very obvious that he was looking. His face was a picture of delight: caught you in the act! We were at the gas station, weeks into our relationship, and because everyone had been sequestered for most of the year, nobody knew that Jake was no longer with his spouse. Many acquaintances of Jake that we bumped into thought he was cheating and, despite having been acting quite honorably all this time, having done nothing wrong, this was the first - and lingering - impression of us together. It’s something that neither Jake nor I would ever quite live down.
